I thought that being a fisherman/woman meant having an ingrained sense of self and an awareness of others along with a core belief system that included values such as courteousness, selflessness, understanding, and above all else, a love and respect for all life. Regardless of whether you fish to eat or fish for sport and practice catch and release, a respect for nature and all it holds is a necessity.
These expectations that I have of fellow fishermen/women are beginning to change and become as jaded as watching a self absorbed, money grubbing athlete/celebrity/socialite spew nonsense about how society owes him/her, and I am seriously beginning to question the respect and humanity of my fellow angler.
A few years back my family and I took a trip to fish in Alaska. We planned a Fly In fishing trip to Alexander Creek in the hopes that it would get us away from the masses and put us on some major salmon. To our surprise, however, we were not even remotely alone. There were 500 other anglers sold on a piece of river 10 feet wide and not very long...but I was just excited to fish for salmon. It was my first Salmon trip.
This was my first experience dealing with the rudeness and ill will that some anglers harbor towards other anglers on the same lake. If one of my tripmates caught a salmon, it wasn't five seconds before 40 rods were zinging over our heads and boats to fish that spot. Not only is this rude, but it is dangerous. I can't tell you how many times I almost got hooked. It was scary...and boy were those guys rude in other ways. I heard some language that made even me blush...and I thought I had heard it all...lol.
Apparently this is becoming all too common. The values that the fishing industry has prided itself on...the values that outdoor companies still engage in to build a great company and rapport with their customers are values that we no longer see out on the water. The values that built this industry are disappearing with each rude gesture, word, or action from one angler to another....and what are we teaching our children???? It is appalling...
I realize that fishing is a sport for many people...but what happened to sportsmanship...are we so worried about the payday that we no longer have the common decency to respect our fellow man?? Or are we all just headed towards bitchdom for the sake of being an ass??
I experience these types of human to human actions every single day...and you know what...the lake is where I have always gone to avoid it...because on the lake, I could always count on a friendly wave, a courteous gesture, or a nice long chat with someone who loves fishing as much as I do.
It seriously pains me to think that this no longer exists and that fishing is nothing more than another way for humans to be nasty to one another...fishing has always been my saving grace because it continuously reminds and teaches me what is truly important in this life...and I think that perhaps instead of pushing another person out of a spot that they were in first or hitting them in the head with your lure and hook as you try and out fish the spot from a hundred yards away...perhaps we should all just sit out on the lake...with no rods and no reels in our hands and just listen to be reminded that nothing in this life should be taken for granted, nothing is guaranteed, and with a kind heart, anything is possible...
We need to get back to the place where every single person on the lake understood that every fish caught was a blessing and every friendly gesture was a gift...this world owes us nothing, but we do owe our fellow man the courtesy of being human.
