Mean People Suck...

and I'll admit that I don't like them one bit. Just a while ago, I logged into my blog like normal...happy as a clam with the exciting events of late. However, what wasn't normal was checking my unmoderated comments to find a really nasty, just plain mean-spirited rant. Of course, although the person talked tough...they weren't brave enough to leave a name...LOL.
This is the first comment of the negative kind that I have received since starting this blog, and although it really was too sad to upset me, the words, along with other recent events, got me thinking. The person who left the comment obviously does not like me. Whoever she is...and yes I know it is a SHE because I could tell by the words that were used...does not think that it is appropriate to be a woman who loves the outdoors AND a woman who is not afraid to show her feminine, sexy side. Or perhaps she is threatened by my refusal to play by the old rules of what a woman simply cannot be.
When I began this blog, I did so because I truly loved the sport of fishing. I loved everything that it represented, everything that it entailed, and all of the blessings that being involved in the sport allowed me to find. I returned from my first Canadian fishing trip with a renewed passion for the sport of fishing in general and specifically for Canadian fishing. I wanted to YELL to the world that fishing was a SUPER FABULOUS time to be had by all. Most of all, I wanted more women to see that you could be a part of nature, be an expert on a subject that was traditionally a men's only sport, and be feminine, fun, and sexy all at the same time.
Today, I continue to promote that message on this blog, and in my other fishing endeavors, and it is NOT a message that I am ashamed of. As a matter of fact, it is a message that I absolutely REFUSE to quit promoting. I refuse to succumb to the age old stereotype that a woman must either be intelligent and credible OR beautiful and sexy and that a woman absolutely CANNOT possess all of those characteristics simultaneously. It is a ridiculously old misconception that I do not agree with, and I will continue fighting to rid the world of this tired, judgmental way of thinking regardless of how much backlash or how many harsh comments I receive.
As The Fisherbabe, as an Attorney At Law, and as a woman, I am living proof that a person can be absolutely anything that he OR she desires to be. I am living proof that a woman can feel smart and sexy at the same time...that she can embrace her femininity and be provocative while being intelligent and WITHOUT being immediately discredited or dismissed due to possessing those qualities. I am laying it out on the line right here, and I am saying that I WILL NOT stop being who I am because it threatens to overturn an outdated regime that so many unfortunate souls still sadly follow...I will not stop being feminine and girly and sexy, and I will not stop being intelligent, well spoken, and CREDIBLE...and I ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT STOP DOING ALL OF THOSE THINGS ALL AT THE SAME DAMN TIME!!
I am not afraid to be called sexy. As a matter of fact, I kind of like it. I am also not afraid to touch a fish. But most important of all, I am not afraid to be sexy WHILE touching a fish. Times they are a'changin folks...and I think it is high time people notice.
I am The Fisherbabe...and I am smart, sexy, fun, and fiesty. Watch out world 'cause I'm not planning on changing anytime soon.
Now that I've gotten that heavy subject off my (in the words of my hater) fat, cake eating shoulders (LOL), tomorrow I will be back to my sassy old self. Today was just...well...one of those days...LOL :) I am sure you all know the kind :) Here's to hoping you all have a FABULOUS night...and here's to me having one too!!! :)
Happy Fishing ~

  1. Wow Lizzy - how demoralizing is a post like that? You know, because we write about fishing, and assume we appeal to fishermen, we also assume they are all great and will like and relate to us and our blogs. The reality is that our little sub-culture is really just a cross-section of life in general, and it does contain mean, jealous, clueless people, and they do suck. Stick to your guns, and keep doing what you love to do - it resonates with the people who matter.

Sorry you had to deal with one of the sucky ones.

  2. Hey Joe!! I refuse to allow it to be demoralizing because then whoever left it wins. I pity whoever it was because...I mean really...what a sad life they must lead :(

It is sometimes easy to forget that among the industry mean spirits lurk. I just try to keep in mind that, although jerks live among us, its the positive relationships that you forge that really matter.

For me it really just comes down to this. If I have to take a million horrible comments to make even one FABULOUS friend such as yourself, it is completely and absolutely worth it...without a doubt!!!

    Thanks for the support!! :)

  3. Great Post and I agree 100% I can't think of anything better than a sexy girl who likes the outdoors and loves to fish. Matter of fact, speaking from a single fisherguy. Your prefect :)

    Good job Lizzy, keep'em coming!

  4. Gotta be a quote of the week.

"I am not afraid to be called sexy. As a matter of fact, I kind of like it. I am also not afraid to touch a fish. But most important of all, I am not afraid to be sexy WHILE touching a fish."

I just lost my train of thought again...why does that always happen here?

  5. Hey Lizzy. It takes all kinds to make a world. Our community just doesn't need that kind. Keep up what you're doing. The good guys (our blog community) are all behind you.

  7. No matter how hard you try to make EVERYONE happy, there will always be people that get angry with you. Generally I've found that those people are easily put in their place because they are incapable of rational thought.

Those of us that have talked with you at length know your heart is in the right place. As long as you have a passion for fishing, then do it your way. Anything else would be a sell out.

  8. From experience in the blogasphere, anonimity begets a boldness to be hateful, not found when you've got to look someone in the eyes. Until the day that this person has the spine to comment with a name their comments are to be considered non-existant.

If you insult me, or my friends dear reader, (whom we all know is reading through all of these responses)leave a name, and an email so you can defend your position, instead of shooting off your mouth, and running off into the wilds of the interweb.

  9. Lizzy! If there's anyone who can relate, it's me girl. As everyone else here is saying - you can't please everyone AND there will always be people that are ultra conservative and/or take life way too seriously. Keep up the fabulous work!

  11. The outpouring of support and kind words from all of you leaves me without adequate words to express my appreciation. There is simply no way to thank you enough for having my back ;)

Mariko ~ Thanks for your support. I can only imagine the mean people that YOU have to deal with...lol :) It brightens my day to be reminded that there are really genuine, super fabulous women like you in the world!!

Ok Capt. Jeff...LOL...I have no idea what a BUFF is. The only thing that comes to mind is "in the buff" and that ain't happening LOL :) Please expain!!!

  12. Yes, us beautiful folks do have it tough - you should read some of the comments I get on my blog poking fun at my ruggedly square jaw & washboard abs - okay, maybe that was a dream I had once, but I digress...

Seriously, glad to see you plan to keep on doing what you're doing. As far as I can tell you've got 58 "followers" as I type this, and who knows how many more readers. I'm sure they aren't just males either, so you must be doing something right!

  13. Lizzy....A BUFF is a product that came on the market just over a decade ago that has a big following from outdoor enthusiasts, anglers being one of them. They became very popular down in the keys for pulling up and using as a neck and face shield. Being a guide here on Cape Cod I don't leave home without mine and in the winter months use it as a neck warmer. They have hundreds of different prints, including fish prints, *check out the angler models*.
Being the highly successful Fisherbabe that you are and noticing how damned sexy you look holding a pole, I couldn't help but vision you wearing ummm...just a BUFF!!...
Now before you get all *Im gonna dope slap his ass* on me you should know that they stretch and hug and would cover just enough of a curvaceous body to be seriously considered for your SEXY GEAR thread!!!...

  15. Hi Lizzy,
Just like to add my voice to the others here who are as angry, but not surprised at one nameless person’s narrow small minded view of the world. Just keep on doing what you’re doing gal you have my support 100%.

  17. Lizzy.. I am an outdoor woman to the core.. born and raised as such.. I am now a wife and mother and still hold a deep passion for what nature has to offer, and YES.. there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with being a sexy and sensual woman..I choose to live through example to young women out there who have never been taught that they should be respected as smart, beautiful women. and that they do NOT have to sell them selves short and use said "sex appeal" to make it in the outdoor world.. You have a great thing going here, just remember that there are many young influential girls out there who may some day look up to you.. class goes along way, and there is a very thin line between being a classy sexy woman and sending the wrong message.

  18. Lizzy, We've had this discussion before and I have to disagree. Women in the outdoors, whether hunting or fishing, want to be respected for their abilities not how cute or sexy they look. That is the difference. When I see half naked females on outdoor sites or in magazines, I feel it has no place there. And I'm not alone. Ask most females. The message you are giving here is the "old guys" way of thinking. Plaster a hot babe, half naked and we'll sell this magazine or this product. Does it sell? Sure it does. But it has nothing to do with representing serious women of the outdoors. It has to do with "hot babes".

As a female, there's nothing wrong with wanting to feel "sexy". It's just something I prefer sharing with my husband and not the oudoor world.

There's nothing wrong with feeling good and looking good while fishing. But I would hope, if you take fishing as serious as you say you do, you'd prefer people had more respect for you than what you're wearing or how sexy you look.

  19. Thank you all very much for your comments on this very touchy subject that I have brought to light with this post.

I agree with Stacey that a little class does go along way. Unfortunately in this day and age, people's definition of class varies by such a large degree that I have come to the realization that, as Mariko says, you can't please everyone.

This is who I AM...but it may not be who YOU are, and that is perfectly GREAT. We are all unique and different, but we all have something in common. We are all promoting a common message that the outdoors is a FANTASTIC, WONDEROUS, AMAZING place with activities that all can enjoy, and that it has room for EVERY SINGLE PERSON!!

Just because we each choose to promote the message differently, doesn't mean we should ever forget or disrespect anothers pure love for the sport.

Thanks to all of you who commented!!

  20. I love mean nasty people, it keeps me humble and it also tests me at the same time. When I expose myself to the world there is going to be people out there who disagree with me and what I do, say and believe in. I have been threatened with violence, I have been challanged to fist fights, I have been called all sorts of names I cannot repeat here.

The point here I am making is I know who I am and I like myself. It sounds like you know who you are, and you like yourself. SO WHY CHANGE !! The bottom line is jealousy, envy and the likes. All those nice mean people who comment on our sites, I don't see their websites, they dont give their names, and I surly do not see their pictures of 20-40 LB fish.

Thanks for exposing yourself to the world Lizzy with your pictures, the articles and the videos.
