BLACK FRIDAY...

really gives off an air of evil, doesn't it? My mother and I were up at 4AM this morning to go "day after Thanksgiving day" shopping. We decided that the reason they call it black friday is because people are freaking insane for $5.00 Barbie Dolls. She and I go every single year, but the crowds of people never cease to amaze us.
I, for one, bought way more and spent way more than I should have...but it seems that is what the holiday season has come to in recent years. Seems to me that the most important question to most children, and adults for that matter, is "what did you BUY me and how MUCH did it cost?"
Personally, I think teaching your children (or an adult friend) to fish or hunt is a great cure for bad cases of greed that seem to hover around the earth during the holiday season. We really forget to be thankful for the most wonderful things in life!!
Fishing and hunting can give a person a sense of the natural wonder that most definitely still exists in the world. When I visit a Canadian lake for a fishing trip and I step out of my boat to sit down for a shore lunch, I am completely humbled by the fact that no other person in the world may have set foot on that piece of land. It makes me joyful that my life is so blessed and that I am grounded enough to feel so small at that moment.
The feelings of greed seem to melt away when you sit on a lake (or in a stand) and realize that it doesn't really matter if you own the latest tv or have the best house on the block. Those normal feelings of daily stresses that feel so weighty, greed, and frenzy melt away when you realize that some things will never change and that the lake will always welcome you with open arms.
A lake does not judge and will only listen. It will not ask questions and the only advice it will offer is a beautiful catch that always seems to help you regain the knowledge of what is really important in your life. Reservations (and makeup) are not needed...nor are they relevant to success. The lake prefers that you come as you are...it's one of the only places on earth that truly doesn't care your gender or the color of your skin. The lake does not discriminate...on the lake, we are all just human. We are all pursuing the same goal...we all have something in common.
It's just you against the fish, and there is nothing better in the world that feeling a tug on your line. I, today, am so thankful that I am so blessed and that I have had the opportunity to witness the most beautiful places in the world. I, for one, feel so very blessed that the lake is my friend and that I know that it is a friend that will never let me down.
Much love to you all and remember to be thankful this holiday season for the things that are truly important.
Happy Blessings ~

GREAT Post. Lizzie. Very introspective. I especially like the line "A Lakes does not judge and will only listen". With your permission, I may use that line (and of course, credit you as the author) as the basis of a future post.

I completely agree and would expand the lake concept to include all waterways. When I am on a high mountain trout stream, and there is a cutthroat trout rising delicately to eat some unseen bug, it's just me and the fish. It doesn't matter if my rod is a Handmade bamboo or a clearance special. Nor does it matter if I drove to the trailhead in an Escalade or a Kia. Nothing matters except faking the fish into thinking that my offering is real and edible. Its why I absolutely love fishing situations that have some aspect of site fishing involved in them.

Thanks for the post Lizzie
