Underneath My Waders, I am Wearing Victoria's Secret...Deal With It...

Today, I was chatting with a friend over MSN, and the subject of women fishing competitively came up. Now...most of you know that I do not fish competitively. I do, however, think of myself as a pretty adept fisherwoman in some areas of fishing...Pike Fishing, for example. I feel as though a person can be taken seriously even if they fish only because of a true passion for the sport.
However, my friend and I started chatting about the sport of competitive fishing, and fishing in general, and why it was so hard for women to be successful or taken seriously. He said that to be respected women feel the need to behave in a manly way and to be "butch" so to speak. That men respect them more for behaving in this manner and they get more press and attention doing this but still not as much as the men. Another friend of mine also noted that women do not get as much press in the sport and wondered why.
We chatted and chatted about this subject until I finally said..."if a man will only give me respect because I conform to what he thinks I should behave like...or look like...then I do not want his respect"...and that is that.
I thought about my lovely friend Sondra Rankin (http://www.sondrarankin.com/) who is a professional fisherwoman, and she is beautiful. She is also a girl...and she is one when she fishes. She is adorable. Does she gets as much press as I think she deserves...Hell NO!!!! There are so many lovely women in this world that need to be open to the idea that fishing is no longer a man's sport. Sondra embodies this. However, there are so many lovely men in this world that also need to be opened up to this idea, as well. Women like Sondra are slowly making their way in the industry...but I have to ask, how long will it take?
Is this truly a phenomenon that we are combating? Are women still conforming to gain the respect of the men in the industry? Are they hiking up their waders and hiding behind their hats for fear of getting made fun of or standing out for being a woman in a man's world? Do we live in 1950?
I feel that getting women into the sport is something that needs to occur regardless of whether it is in the competitive arena or just out at their local lake. Women do not need to be scared of fishing...you do not have to baby us. We are strong, and we are capable. My theory is...women just do not understand the sport. They do not understand that you can be pretty and dirty, and concerned about your hair all while reeling in a fish bigger than your boyfriends. Introduce more women to the sport of fishing in a way that is relatable to who we really are as women and more women will realize that they love it!!! Simple right???
Girls we have a mission!!! We need to stand up and let down our hair and not be afraid to be who we are while we are casting that rod. We need to stand up and tell young girls that you can out fish your brothers and still be the apple of your daddy's eye. We need to send the message to the next generation of fisherbabes that it is okay to net a monster fish one second...then turn around and ask if your eye makeup is running and if your hair looks fabulous for the photo...and we need to know that it is OKAY to talk about lipstick in the boat. Fishing does not have to be a MAN's sport any longer...you can bet your ass that its okay to talk about beer and sex in the boat...so therefore, I declare that it is okay to talk about makeup and sex and the city in the boat.
There have been times when I have stepped off the boat and into my stilettos ladies...So I am here to say...
UNDERNEATH MY WADERS, I WEAR VICTORIA'S SECRET LINGERIE...DEAL WITH IT!!! It is who I am...It is who I will always be...and you know what...that is just fine!! :)
Happy Fishing...and Shopping ~

  1. As I said before.....as a father of three girls that all fish bring it on.
We as men need to support our daughters just as much as our sons to get into the sport. I feel that even as a man you can be made fun of if you take care of your looks and fish. I have been labelled GQ Redneck before but so be it!!
I think that it is an unfair reality that women feel that they have to conform to the image of the male to be taken seriously in this competitive sport, and that if a beautiful woman gets ahead in the sport she did it with sex appeal and not reel-appeal.

Go for it Lizzy, Sondra and others please help show my princesses and others that you can be all things woman and fish too!!

Just don't school your father :( (kidding)

  3. Great Post!
I have no problem with ladies that love to fish and be outdoors!
Looking for one now(Please send pics of boat:)

I taught my (x)wife how to Bass fish when we're were married and she became quiet the worm fisherperson. Fished 1 Tourny with her and came in 15th out of 140 boats. She enjoyed it, except the early part, the going fast part, the not really having a bathroom part, but other than that she had a blast.
I think that had something to do with me falling in after catching one about 4.
I came up to the surface and she was in the back of the boat laughing her ASS off! it's pretty funny now:)

Great post Lizzy, keep up the good work.

    Life's short, Fish hard!

  4. I believe fishing is evolving into a sport shared by both men and women, slowly but surely.

I have never personally felt that I had to be manly to fish, and I find the men very accepting, if not excited that I love to fish AND that I am a woman.

I think as long as you love what you are doing, you shouldn't care what other people think, or if your hair is messy. If you are having a good time, that's all that matters at the end of the day.

    Good post :)

  5. You are Woman, hear you roar. Lizzy, there are men out there that recognize that a woman is equal to a man and SOMETIMES better. Although my Wife doesn't fish, she is very good at what she does. You are right, this is 2009 not 1950. Go get'em girl. Many of us are behind you 100%.

  7. Great post.

My wife doesn't like fishing because she thinks it's boring. I hope to bring up my daughter so she doesn't think the same way.

A woman that is willing to get down and dirty in whatever she does, fishing especially, is sexy. It shows she has a passion for whatever it is she's doing. I'll take a woman with passion over a princess any day.

  8. I really enjoyed your post. I too am an attractive women who absolutely is in love with fishing. It is my passion!! And i feel the men that see me fish, accept me or respect me because they see that passion in my eyes when im fishing!
I am a firm believer that women can do anything a man can if not better!!!
Since I began fishing I really got into looking online for other women anglers such as myself, to talk to with about the sport of fishing, just because we can relate to eachother in a different way than i can to my boyfriend or guy pals. In that search i really didnt come up with much and it was disappointing to me. So I myself decided to start a blog dedicated to only women anglers all over the world. Castyourlinefishing.blogspot.com is my blog...please check it out. Its very new so I dont have many followers but i do know it takes a little while for these things to start up and take off. I believe that we women need to get together and make women aware that this is their sport too!!

I especially loved the part where you stated you have litterally come off the fishing boat and into your stilettos, whats sexier than that?

Fisherbabe, maybe one day we can change the sport of fishing....lets start now!!!

  9. Thanks for all the comments...

Tammy...my blog started off as a blog dedicated to women as well...however, I have found some of my very best readers, as well as new friends, have been my male readers and fellow bloggers. I have found new friends of both sexes through this blog...I would suggest leaving yourself and your blog open to experience friendly relations with all anglers...it is such a great community of people!!!

As to everyone that has commented... I just kinda think we just all need to stick together and love each other for what each of us bring to the table... :)

  11. Hey, I don't mind Victorias secret...better than old tighty whities! Only I know what I have on under my waders! Could be Vicky's!

All in good fun and I am with you 100%, my experience has been that most of the woman I fish are better fisherman than the men. And I love woman who fish. And I also agree that they do not get the respect and publicity that they deserve. Although, why would anyone want to be a professional fisherman (yournament)??

Just found your blog and will try and keep up with it as much as I can.

  14. Great post Lizzy and I am glad I finally got around to reading it. I support women in any outdoor pursuit. I think your theory is very plausible. Would you ever consider fishing the FLW or WBT tours? I am familiar with Sondra and met a good friend of hers, Pam Bolton at an FLW tour event a couple years ago. Great experience. Keep up the good work kid!

  16. I've always felt fairly welcomed in the world of fishing and supported as well. If anything, the guys grin a mile wide and encourage me more than they route each other on.
On a professional level, there is certainly a lacking of representation of woman, but slowly and surely....it's coming!
    Great post~
