The New Adventures Of An Old Fisherbabe...

Ok so... I am not that old. But today I went to the hairdresser...and to the mall...and thought to myself... "Boy this is going to be a freakin' long winter..."!!! I am pretty depressed right now that my season has come to an end, but my hair looks FABULOUS!!!
The more I thought about the long winter ahead, however, the more I started thinking that I am in need of a couple of new adventures...LIKE ICE FISHING!!!! I always get so moody during the winter...I mean Rapala's PS3 fishing adventures can only hold a person over so long...ya know??? I gotta have me something real and weighty on the end of my ugly stik (thats right B...I LOVE my ugly stik :p) to keep me satisfied.
So...a couple of days ago, I got a comment from my friend Joe over at http://www.wolfwaters.blogspot.com/ and he said that I should quit my whining and start ice fishing. HOW AWESOME WOULD THAT BE!!! I could fish during the winter!!!!! I mean...ok so yeah...it is going to be colder than most anything I have experienced before, but thats okay...I am a tough fisherbabe. Plus...it will probably involve some extensive research since I have never ice fished before in my life! This will probably be one of those adventures where I should video tape it so you can all laugh at my expense...perhaps I will this time ;)
So here is your (and my) homework...Leave me a comment telling me about any experiences you have had ice fishing, whether you have been ice fishing or want to go ice fishing in the future, and what tools or websites will serve me in my adventure.
Can't wait to hear from you all!!!!
HAPPY EDUCATING ~

C'mon! An old Fisherbabe can learn new tricks! I'm glad you're excited about giving ice fishing a try. I think I'm going to try it, too.

My dad has taken me out once or twice when I was a kid and it was just a sit out on the ice and watch the bobber experience. I'm thinking that I would prefer the ice fishing they did in the movie Grumpy Old Men! A shack and a six-pack sounds more like it!

I have yet to go ice fishing, but it is on my list of things to do. It seems crazy that I've never done this since I grew up in Minnesota. Huh.
One of my husband's friends just purchased a ton of ice fishing equipment on Craig's list, so I think we may be fishing some high mountain lakes this winter. Yay!!

You may want to check out Craig's list for equipment - just an idea. :)

Lizzie - I didn't think you read what I wrote! :)

I'll BET that if you put the word out that you are interested, someone in your area who is a seasoned ice angler will take you and your hubby out and show you the ropes. Check out www.iceshanty.com. It is VERY heavily used by die-hard ice anglers in N. America. Click on "Community" and you'll find an Ice Fishining Nebraska section.

I pick and choose my days to ice fish - since I live in marginal ice area, I don't have a need for a shelter - but I love to catch, clean, and eat panfish taken through the ice. Keep us posted on your adventures.

Lizzy, I am hooked on ice fishing. Been going every winter for many seasons now. In my area, it is almost "cult" like. When I go ice fishing, there are usually lots of other ice fishers also, and, it becomes quite fun swapping stories, catching fish, and drinking some hot to keep the body warm. By the way, I love Ugly Stik's too. I even have one set up for ice fishing. It's a beauty. Good luck and hope to see you getting lots of advice from your fellow cold water anglers.

Usually in a glass after the drink is finished. As close as I will get to any ice.

Hey Lizzy, Ice fishing can be a lot of fun. You should try looking for any local winterfests or ice fishing events. I have met a lot of people and had great fun at during these events. I am even hosting an "ice shanty decorating contest" this year for a dam-to-dam fishing contest in Michigan - that a local radio station is going to promote...bring a little liquour to take the edgo off and dress warm! You can make fun out of any situation, warm or cold, if you get creative!

Lizzy, I enjoy ice fishing even though I don't get to do it often enough. Here in MN the ice can gets kind thick by the end of the season so it can be a ton of work drilling holes in the ice. Most of the time you do a lot of work with the sonar right away then find the fish and set up the fish house over the hole. Then you turn on the heater and your nice and tosty.

I've never been ice fishing but hope to try it someday. Here in Texas it rarely gets cold enough to freeze an entire lake over, much less to where you can walk out on the ice. But, I have a friend and coworker who is from northern North Dakota who is a seasoned ice fisherman. Hopefully I can talk him into taking me someday.

Good luck with your ice fishing. I'll have to live vicariously through your posts, as sitting on a bucket watching a flasher (the electronic kind, not the human kind) in freezing temperatures just doesn't do it for me...even if there is an ice shanty & an ample supply of booze involved. That being said, I don't want to be misinterpreted as raining (or snowing) on your parade, good luck and I look forward to reading all about it!
