  2. My favorite memory would have to be the first time my grandfather took me trout fishing. I was like 7 and I had my own fly rod, waders, and vest. It was so much fun.

  3. Welllll Fisherbabe, To choose only one out of all kinds of fond fishing stories is tough however I can sift through the big fish stories, the tipping of canoes, forgetting the plug in the boat stories and fishing my first major bass tournament to come up with the #1 fishing story. It really doesn't have to do with fishing in particular but it was on a fishing trip. My father and I go to Canada every year to Quetico Provincial Park to fish and backpack. It's a trip we look forward to each year and the memories that come from the trip are timeless, just as such as my story. We were on a third day of our trip and had the perfect campsite over looking a big cove with a small island that harbored some bald eagles and a huge marsh where we frequently saw moose. My father and I were setting on a huge cliff at sunset just in awe of the what was around us. At the time I had a lot on my mind and he knew it and asked a few times about it, with me never divulging into details. This time we were sitting there sipping on our nightly crown royal and the subject was brought up again on my troublesome thoughts. At the time he didn't realize that just a few weeks before the trip my future wife told me that we would be starting a family. I was so excited yet didn't know how I could tell my parents. Alas something told me that this was the best moment and I told my father that I had a great, unexpected surprise, and he knew exactly what I meant because I replied with "I'm going to be a grandpa aren't I?" I told him yes and I had never seen my father more happier, not even after catching the 5lb smallie he caught earlier the day. That trip will never be forgot. Along with completing my grand slam for the trip by catching a nice 26" walleye on my last cast of the trip. So many good memories from fishing trips.

  4. My favorite memory was when Dad took me fishing as a little boy and I was having problems hooking this fish so it made me more determined to catch it. Upon re-baiting for the umpteenth time, I proclaimed that I was going to "catch that bastard!" The parents didn't approve of my language but I am sure they were laughing under their breath. There are so many more memories..fishing is my favorite thing to do!

  5. Thanks for the contest and congrats on the 10,000 views. Here's my story, enjoy.

Last March, Lilly (my 3-year old daughter) received a Lightning McQueen Cars fishing rod for her birthday from her Mom Mom & G-Daddy, and she insisted on going fishing...IMMEDIATELY!

We rigged up the line with a bobber, some split shot, and a hook baited with a piece of bagel (Mommy's secret bait). On Lilly's first cast, we waited...waited....waited...and then WHAM!!!! The bobber went under violently and Lilly started reeling like crazy! The drag on that tiny Shakespeare reel was screaming - no joke.

After about 5 minutes of reeling - and with some help from Daddy pulling in some line by hand - Lilly landed her first fish. It was a bit of a pig too. The Mayan Cichlid was about 8 inches long and was quite thick - a real slab. Unfortunately, Lilly was a little afraid of the fish once we got it out of the water and wouldn't pose with her catch. Instead, she hid behind Mom Mom while Mommy snapped a picture of the fish and her rod & reel.

Lilly was so excited she wanted to go fishing again..."again, again," I believe were her exact words. Well...the second time wasn't as fruitful. Oh, Lilly hooked another fish, but she also let go of the rod at the same time. SPLASH, into the water it went, and before we could attempt to grab it - the fish, rod & all - swam away into the depths of the pond. :(

Needless to say, Lilly was hysterical about losing her rod. But after some hugs and kisses, and everybody telling her how proud we were of her, she quickly calmed down and a trip to Target was immediately scheduled. Fish beware, Lilly has rearmed, Disney Princess rod locked & loaded.

  6. One of my great stories happened this summer when I caught 3 nice fish in an hour and a half. It included a 27" Northern pike where my line broke just as I got it in the boat!

  7. Congrats to Fisherbabe for reaching 10k, that's a great deal in only a few months. That's what a good blog does, and you have a good'un:)

    Here's my fishing story:)

Many years ago we used to fish a old oxbow lake off the black warrior river near Fosters Al. There was 2 or 3 of these, you had to be a member or have a member with you. I was lucky my friend was as I couldn't and still can't afford their rates:)
The lake we were fishing was full of standing timber, laydowns, weeds, Lilly pads every where, the kind of lake Bill Dance seems to fish often:)
We started our morning throwing buzzbaits, pink floating worms and topwater baits. We prolly caught 20 or so "footballs" these fish were healthy almost as fat as long and dark green color. The water was a tanic color and full of fish.
After fishing around one side and wearing out the bass I decided to go big:) I tied on a 12 inch worm without a weight and swam it among the lillypads. There was a section of pads, prolly around 20'x20' 15 or 20 feet off the bank that we haven't fished yet.

My first cast across the pads, I slowly started swimming the big worm when the whole pad field exploded, and I mean exploded, the wake of it made our 12' boat roll. We both about had a heart attack and thought that had to be a state record of some sort. I miss the biggest strike I've EVER had:(
Well, I reeled up and made another cast same place, I hadn't move the worm 2 feet when the fish hit again, blew a hole about 5 feet and missed my worm. I kept on swimming the worm(now my shakes had put more action to it also:)Bout 5 feet more and again someone threw a cinder block into the pads at my worm, and again it missed:( I was just about to the end of the 20 or so feet of pads when it happened again, this time I dropped my rod and watched my line, this time it started moving and set back with all I had, when I stuck the fish it didnt move, I set it again and this time the fish went ballistic, it pulled our little tin boat about 20-30 feet while I tried to gain control. After about 5 minutes, seemed like 5 hours I had the fish close and told my buddy to get ready to help. We had no net and didnt know what we had yet. When the fish surfaced it was the biggest gar I had ever seen in my life.
I could not lift it out of the water, all I could do was lift it about half way. Thought about keeping it because it was at the time by for my biggest fish of any kind. We both guessed it weight in the area of 60-70 lbs. But really didnt want that thing in a 12' tin boat:)
After talking to a local taxidermist he said it was a alligator gar and he would have mounted it for free since it was so large.
Man I would give anything for at least a picture, but now after catching 100lb tarpon, 50 lb cobia, 30lb red snapper and 10 lb black bass in my life so for that one fish with it's multiple hits and finely boating it is one top of my list of fish caught. I'll never ever forget that day and glad I got to share it here, sorry for the length and grammer,etc...
I fish way better than I write:)

well, there's my fishing story, and again congrats to a fine(pun intended)fishergirl on a site well done! "thumbsup"

    fish on

  8. Good Stories... I shared one of my most memorable moments in Lizzy's blog interview with me, so I'll refrain from reposting it here. Good Luck to you all.

  9. Ok, I'll keep this short and sweet. One time when I was out in high school a buddy and I were fishing in an old granite quarry. I caught a five lb walleye and not more than ten seconds later my buddy reeled in a large northern. It was the first time I had ever caught any fish in a quarry. Now it is etched in my mind forever.

  10. My favorite fishing tale revolves around the much malaigned, boney but delish carp. My Ex and I went to a State Parks & Rec clinic on carp fishing (they're trying to rid our lakes of these beasts), so I learned all about canned corn and hooks, and keeping the line still. Really great information for a beginner "fisherbabe" such as myself.

Parks and Rec also went through the best way to clean the fish, and prepare it for cooking. Its a rather involved process, what with the giant scales and all the bones. The park rangers were also giving away free samples of fried carp.

While my boyfriend at the time was off eating carp, I was on the shore with a borrowed Rod and Reel waiting for a carp to nibble on my niblets (haha). I waited and waited, until BOOM, my line took off, it was a carp! I fought like hell to get the Carp, nearly broke my rod in the process. I got him to shore, only to have no Boyfriend to assist me in landing my fish...and no idea how to get him out of the water.

This was, afterall, the first fish I EVER caught.

As it turns out, a couple of 13 year old boys were fishing near by, they had a HUGE net and helpe me pull him out of the water. By the time my boyfriend realized I'd caught a big old carp, the pre-teen guys were teaching me how to hold a fish and taking my photo.

I don't know the poundage, but he was a big guy, at least a foot long, which isn't really that great for a carp. BUT for your first catch ever, not bad. Not having anticpated catching a fish, we did not bring a cooler, thus I put my "whopper" back into the lake, content with my photo as proof.

  12. I have to say, my most memorable time fishing was at my grandparents lake home at Lake Murray in South Carolina.
I was 8 yrs. old and throwing a floater into a bunch of weeds from the bank because all of the older men had left me to go have their fun and catch their limit on the lake.
Well, when they returned they had nothing in the boat and my grandfather and I were taking pictures of my NINE POUND Big Mouth Bass that I had reeled in all by myself. I used to have a picture but unfortunately it is nowhere to be found now. It was the fish and FOUR hands holding it up...my grandfather was behind me because I could not hold it myself.

My favorite memory was the first time I caught a fish with my custom fly rod. We hiked back into the McIntyre river in the Rawah Wilderness in Colorado. I used a size 20 renegade and it took a few tries as the fish were quick, but I got the hang of it. I still have the picture with a red sweatshirt, jeans and my knee waders.

  16. OK, Lizzie - I'll play, too.

My story is a variation on the age-old story of Dad takes son fishing and the first fish is caught. Only mine has a twist - in 1993, I taught my (then) 57 year old Dad to flyfish. We went to my best friend's log cabin on Kettle Ck in PA, and I guided Dad to his first trout on a fly. He still goes to that same camp every year for a week flyfishing for trout with his friends, and, when we can get there, my brother and I.

That's what memories are made of.

    Congrats on 10K!

  17. I looked at it and laughed at it as if it were the kid that ate his boogers in third grade... I looked at it again and then looked at Larry my significant other and said: 'You want me to do what with this?' That was a plain old piece of cedar wood and were 'Gonna go a fishin'' Not just any fishing mind you, we were going to cross the Gulf Stream to the beautiful Bahamas and go fishing for Yellowfin Tuna... and thus begins my fishing memory of a lifetime.
We always went and made the crossing every year, but this year was special, as it we promised to make it a 'Football Season', also known as a Tuna Fishing Trip. Larry made his usual rounds to the Ship's Stores and on a recommendation, came back with the Cedar Plugs. I could hardly contain myself, as how could something that resembled something that a my Grandpa would whittle on his porch catch my Tuna?
We got to our camp, Rosie's, and Jason who usually will accompany us for a day of fisihing joined us for the magic of our Football Season. We got the lines ready, and put the plain old cedar plugs out... We put the outriggers up as soon as we saw the birds, and before we knew it, Jason was yelling: 'Fish On, Mon! Get your game on!' All our lines were screaming, and the action was crazy! I had never seen anything like it... The fun and excitement! All on just a plain-jane cedar plugs. My catch was a 70 lb Yellowfin Tuna. We caught several Blackfins and other Yellows as well, but the 70 pounder was all mine...we had fresh sushi and cold beer on the dock coming in. A great day had by all! My lesson learned: It is the little things that come in plain brown wrappers that often lead to the most excitement in life. Don't be so judgemental!

  18. My memory has more to do with a fish that almost caught me! I was snorkeling at John Pennekamp Park in Key Largo,FL in about 4 ft of water, just cruising along checking out all the beautiful sea life in the coral. I was in front of my brother in law and he taps me on the shoulder, as I turn to look, all I see is a mouthful of teeth, the biggest damn Barracuda in the keys is inches from my mask! AHHHH!! I turned and started swimming so fast, I was almost walking on water!

I have some good memories of catching trout in Colorado, but that story will always be first and foremost!

Great blog Lizzy, thanks for letting us all share our stories, and especially reading about yours!

  19. My favorite memory is taking my first born son fishing for the first time when he was 4 years old and we caught 21 bluegill right off the bat. He had a ball, I had a ball, what a great start to a life of fishing.

  20. First of all, CONGRATULATIONS Lizzy, this idea of yours is GREAT and, really, thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to win.

My fishing moment is when I caught my first Musky, while fishing for bass without any luck.

I decided to troll back to the ramp when all of the sudden y got "snagged" for the 'nth time, except this "snag" was doing something diferent...headshakes!!!

After 10 minutes of fighting and almost losing my fish, my lure and my tiny bass net, I finally boated the fish.

During all that time, a lady was watching me from the shore and when I pulled the fish out and was admiring the beautiful colors on that 40" fish, she yelled at me "is that a pike?" I answered "It's a musky!"...She replied "wait, I'll call my husband, he'll love seeing that..."

So she went and got her husband and he said "too bad you don't have a camera"..."I do," I said "but no one to take the pic". He told me to pull closer to shore and he would take a picture of me with my camera...and so he did. I am glad he did it because I had proof to show my dad that I had caught my first musky.

The fish was revived (took about 3 minutes) and released unharmed to be caught in the future.

And that is my most memorable fishing tale.

  21. Great contest Lizzy, your blog is awesome!! Can’t wait for our fishing trip together.. I have never had a fishing trip with another lady so I know it’s going to be a BLAST!!!

One of my favourite memories of fishing was the first time I went in a derby. It was a walleye derby, which they have in the area I live in every year. I remember going to the weigh-in area as a kid and they had a huge tank with all the fish, it was so interesting to me and I dreamed of catching fish that big one day.

It was a couple of years ago that I entered the derby. I went out at midnight on opening day with my two friends and we fished ALL night from 12am-8:30am without a single strike. I got my first bite at 6am and caught a mudcat, and about a half-hour later I caught a little perch. The guys didn’t catch anything!!

We were trolling on our way back home in an area that was loaded full of boats. I threw my line in and suddenly I felt something. At first it moved but then it felt like it was stuck on bottom. My friend said ‘I think it’s weeds or something’ and then it started to move. I kept reeling and then all of a sudden the fish of my life surfaced by the boat, I screamed!! It was huge!!! The fish was only hanging on by a hair.. the end of the lip with only 1 hook in and just barely! Another boat nearby heard my excitement and they started moving closer to take a look.. the problem was we did not have a net. At this time the Ministry Officers were going around checking for licenses and they saw me reeling it in. The fish was now at the surface and we had one small problem… getting it in the boat!! My friend wanted to grab it but it could have easily broke free. The other fisherman saw what was going on so they docked up to our boat, the one guy jumped in with his net and scooped up the fish for me. I was so excited, and the Ministry began snapping photos of the catch!! They told me they had not yet seen a bigger fish that day so I was really convinced I may win the grand prize – a fishing boat!!

We weighed in and the fish was 8 and a half pounds, which did not make the top 10, but it was that day that I got hooked on tournament fishing! It was so amazing to catch such a big fish, and although I did not win anything, it sparked a new passion for me. :)
