UNBELIEVABLE...

So...the guys from the camp we were heading to next week just called and said that the ice is not off yet :( OMG...seriously guys...last year this happened too. We actually booked our camp on the way up to Canada because the one we booked a year in advance was not ready because of ice. I am not happy with ice in Canada right now. The good news is we have one or two other options...but please...I beg of you all...pray to whatever God you pray to that the ice will be off Lake Waskiaowaka by Saturday of next week :( I am an UNHAPPY fisherbabe right now... 1. Lizzie - the earliest season up north can be the greatest trip ever, or the biggest disappointment in the world. Late ice can screw up everything. I know it won't be any real consolation, but ...

Last year I booked a lodge in SW Ontario for a trip for my Dad, brother, son and I - our first ever as a group. dad and my son had never been to Canada, so the trip was planned around spawning smallies on a multispecies lake, so we'd at least be able to get something. smallmouth went up on beds the week before we got there, and then the temp plummetted, the fish got knocked off beds and suspended over deep water. Pike were scattered. Walleye non-existant. fishing flat out sucked - my brother fished 2 days before he got A HIT!

I wrote in my blog, and in a few articles, that the uncertainty of early spring has ruined me for that fishery. If I lived on a like with trophy pike, I could afford to play it by ear, and fish when the fish were ready. However, if I have to plan the trip a year out, I am avoiding the inconsistency of the spring fishery. I'm now going north in solid summer patterns - July 4 - mid-August. My pike trip this year is the first week of August. It will definitely be a deep weed edge pattern with fish bulking up for winter.

I REALLY hope your trip turns out OK, but if not, the next one will make up for it - the pike gods would owe you!!

  2. I suggest you book a trip to the tropics and catch some real drag burners. It's 80 degrees and sunny. The ice is in the drinks.
